The short version
Your journal data stays on your device only. Drink logs, urge logs, plans, and check-ins are stored locally — we have no server and no account system. We do use Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics (by Google) to collect anonymous usage statistics and crash reports. These contain no personally identifiable information and no content from your journal. We show no ads and never sell your data.
1. Who we are
CueBreak: Alcohol CBT is developed and published by Exponential Dog. This Privacy Policy explains how the CueBreak: Alcohol CBT mobile application handles information when you use it. If you have questions, contact us at motoharujap@gmail.com.
2. What data the app stores
All data is entered voluntarily by you and stored exclusively on your device. The app records the following categories of information to provide its core CBT-based functionality:
| Category | What is stored | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Goal & preferences | Your goal type (abstinence or mindful drinking), weekly drink limit, personal values, app install date | Device only |
| Urge logs | Timestamp, HALT state (Hungry / Angry / Lonely / Tired), urge intensity rating (1–10), technique chosen, outcome (surfed / drank / partial / abandoned), optional free-text location and automatic thoughts | Device only |
| Drink logs | Timestamp, drink type, quantity in standard drinks, HALT state, social context, optional location text, optional mood note, whether the drink was a conscious choice | Device only |
| If-Then plans | Trigger category, optional situation description, planned response text, usage and success counts | Device only |
| Weekly check-ins | Three self-rated slider values (urge frequency, coping quality, commitment level), timestamp | Device only |
| CBT progress | Derived metrics (success rate, milestone flags) computed from the above logs | Device only |
Fields marked as optional in the app (such as location and free-text notes) are never required. You may leave them blank at any time.
3. How data is stored
Your journal data — device only
All journal data (drink logs, urge logs, if-then plans, check-ins, and preferences) is written to a local SQLite database and DataStore preferences file managed by the Android operating system on your device. These files are sandboxed to CueBreak: Alcohol CBT and are not accessible to other apps on your device.
We do not maintain any remote server, cloud database, or backup service for this data. If you uninstall CueBreak: Alcohol CBT, all journal data is permanently deleted from your device. We have no way to recover it.
No encryption beyond the default Android application sandbox is applied. If your device is encrypted (which is the default on modern Android), the data files are covered by that device encryption.
Analytics and crash data — Firebase (Google)
We use two Google Firebase services to improve the app:
- Firebase Analytics — records anonymised in-app events so we can understand which features are used and how people move through the app. The events we send are: urge_started, technique_selected (with technique name), urge_surfing_completed, defusion_completed, breathe_completed, drink_logged (with a drink count integer), if_then_plan_saved, check_in_completed, and onboarding_completed. None of these events include your free-text notes, HALT states, mood ratings, location text, or any other journal content.
- Firebase Crashlytics — automatically captures crash reports so we can diagnose and fix bugs. Reports contain a stack trace, device model, Android version, app version, memory/disk state at the moment of the crash, and a timestamp. No journal content is included.
Both services associate data with a Firebase Installation ID — a pseudonymous, per-install identifier generated by the Firebase SDK. This is not your Google Advertising ID (which we do not access) and is not linked to your name, email, or any other identifying information.
Data collected by Firebase is stored on Google's servers. Firebase Analytics data is retained for up to 14 months; Crashlytics data is retained until deleted from our Firebase console. This data is governed by Google's Privacy Policy.
4. What we never collect or share
The following applies categorically and without exception:
- We never store your journal data on a server. There is no CueBreak: Alcohol CBT account, no sign-in, and no cloud sync. Your drink logs, urge logs, plans, and check-ins never leave your device.
- We never share your journal content with any third party — including Google/Firebase. The only data Firebase receives is the anonymised event names and counts described in section 3; it never receives the text, ratings, or details you enter in the app.
- We do not use advertising. CueBreak: Alcohol CBT contains no ads, no ad networks, and no ad-targeting technology. We do not access your Google Advertising ID.
- We do not collect or sell personal information. We have no name, email address, phone number, or any other identifier linked to you.
- We do not track your location. The optional location field is free text you type yourself; the app never requests GPS or network location from your device.
- We do not use cookies or web tracking. The app itself is not a web application and sets no cookies.
5. App permissions
CueBreak: Alcohol CBT requests the following Android system permission:
| Permission | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
| INTERNET | Used to open external links (such as this Privacy Policy) in your device's browser, and by Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics to send anonymised usage and crash data to Google's servers as described in section 3. |
No other permissions (camera, microphone, contacts, location, notifications, etc.) are requested.
6. Children's privacy
CueBreak: Alcohol CBT is designed for adults who wish to manage their relationship with alcohol. The app is not intended for use by individuals under the age of 18 (or the legal drinking age in your jurisdiction, whichever is higher). We do not knowingly collect any information from minors. Because all data stays on the device and we collect nothing ourselves, there is no mechanism by which we would receive data from a minor.
If you believe a minor has used the app, the appropriate action is to uninstall it, which removes all locally stored data.
7. Your rights and choices
Access and deletion
Because all data is stored locally on your device, you have complete control over it at all times:
- To delete all data: Uninstall CueBreak: Alcohol CBT. Android removes the app's sandboxed database and preferences files automatically.
- To delete specific entries: This feature is on our development roadmap. Currently, uninstalling and reinstalling the app is the only way to clear all data.
Data portability
Export and backup functionality is on our development roadmap. At this time there is no built-in export feature. Because no data leaves your device, there is nothing held by us to request.
GDPR (European Economic Area)
If you are located in the EEA, the legal basis for processing your personal data is legitimate interests (providing the app's core functionality at your explicit request). Since we do not collect or process your data on any server, obligations such as data subject access requests, rectification, and erasure apply only to data held on your own device — which you control directly. If you have questions, contact us at motoharujap@gmail.com.
CCPA (California residents)
We do not sell personal information. We do not share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. As a California resident you have the right to know what personal information is collected, but because all data stays on your device and we hold none of it, there is nothing for us to disclose beyond what this policy describes.
8. Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this Privacy Policy — for example if a future version of CueBreak: Alcohol CBT introduces a cloud sync feature — we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, provide an in-app notice before the change takes effect. Continued use of CueBreak: Alcohol CBT after a change constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
We encourage you to review this page periodically. The current version is always accessible from the Settings screen inside the app.
